Facial Hair/Hirsutism DEF:
Refers to a coarse, or the colorful hair that grows on the face and body of a woman. Sometimes, it may be the result of some kind of disease.
For most women, having a thin, pale, barely noticeable facial hair but this hair can sometimes be a closer and more visible.
About half of all people with hirsutism have an excess of androgens. These hormones have a tendency to set to the activation of male physical and sexual development. Women tend to have low androgen levels, but these levels can vary for a number of reasons.
The higher levels of over-stimulating the hair follicles, resulting in hair-a woman's normal to experience.
- oily skin
- acne
- hair loss is known as alopecia
- receding hair line
- enlarged clitoris as well as the larger
- a deep voice
1- Increased levels of androgens or oversensitivity of the hair follicles to androgens can cause hirsutism.
2- Although androgens are available to men at higher levels, women also have these hormones in smaller quantities.
3- Male hormones, such as testosterone, stimulate hair growth, increase body size, and intensify the growth and pigmentation of hair.
4- High levels of insulin, a hormone that “unlocks” cells to absorb energy from sugars, might also contribute to the development of hirsutism. Insulin can stimulate the ovarian cells to produce androgens.
5- This might occur in women with insulin resistance, such as in those who have type 2 diabetes.
6- High levels of insulin may also activate the insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-1) receptor in those same cells, similarly increasing androgen production.
7- Since type 2 diabetes can result from obesity, this too may be a risk factor. High Cholestrol may also play a role.
8- Hirsutism can be an adverse effect of certain medications. Androgen therapy that includes testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), or the drug Danazol, may contribute to hirsutism.
9- The body naturally produces DHEA, and some people take it as a supplement to combat age-related conditions, such as osteoporosis. Danazol is a synthetic steroid that sometimes forms a part of endometriosis of treatment. Both may raise testosterone as a side effect.
10- Excessive hair growth in women with normal androgen levels, regular menstrual periods, and no other underlying conditions is called idiopathic hirsutism. This means that the disorder has no identifiable cause.
11- Hirsutism does not always indicate a significant medical anomaly. However, if it starts before puberty, if it is accompanied by other male-related traits such as a deeper voice, or if it may be due to a tumor, the person should seek medical attention.
12- Tumors of the adrenal glands, pituitary glands, and ovaries can sometimes lead to hirsutism. However, hirsutism that occurs for this reason will generally be more severe and onset more quickly than with hormonal causes.
13- Consequently, one half of women with mild hirsutism have elevated levels of circulating androgen, as do most women with more hirsutism. Dark hair in locations which are not typically for growth in females.
14- So, where does this hair growth happen in the chin in the upper lips, in the cheeks, lower abdomen, back inner thighs, so these areas are typical for male pattern hair growth and not in females so when it happens in females this is called hirsutism.
15- Why does it happen so before we know why we must understand hair growth and the pattern of hair growth depends upon the balance between male and female hormones.
16- Even in men there is a small quantity of female hormones and in females there is a small quantity of male hormone secreted this is totally normal and the balance between the two determines the pattern and the type of hair growth so whenever there is an increase in male hormones, in females or there is an increase the sensitivity to male hormones the quantity of hormones is the same but the areas are more sensitive to the normal quantity of hormones and they respond by excessive growth of hat this leads to hirsutism.
17- We have to differentiate this between hypertrichosis and hirsutism ,hypertrichosis is generalized excessive growth of hair which can happen in men or women throughout the body but hirsutism is near pattern of hair growth in a female right.
18-What are the causes of hirsutism first .we must understand it can be familial so in some families it can be little more than usual and in some races like middle eastern.
Mediterranean are South Asians, like Indians you can have a little more hair growth than usual and we have to understand what is more is determined by our cultural characteristics even though the hair growth is know very less ,especially in a manageable age parents may be worried that this may be a problem.
19- The other causes of hirsutism, obesity can lead to this polycystic, ovarian syndrome, a disease in which your ovaries are having cysts can lead to this other hormonal problems.
20- Hormonal problems related to pituitary adrenal our ovaries these are the are ones which are secreting hormones so any problems relating to these can result in hirsutism rarely any tumors, that is cancer arising from these organs can also result in hirsutism.
21- So, when should you visit a doctor. if the hair growth is the only complaint and it is not very severe you need not know immediately panic but if it is sudden and it is very rapid.
DIAGNOSIS :
1- A blood test can help you get your testosterone and DHEA levels.
3- If the menstrual cycle is irregular, then it can be the cause of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
